Water left in the tub is most often the filter stack, which most households have never taken out. Judge the level first, read what is on the filter, then check the high loop, the air gap and the disposer knockout before anything gets blamed on the pump.
Nobody is handed a dishwasher and told it needs maintaining. It gets loaded twice a day for a couple of years, and then one evening a cycle ends with an inch of grey water lying in the bottom and a smell that was not there last month. In a very large share of those Viking calls the machine is sound and the filter stack has simply never been out.
How much water is supposed to be there
Some water is meant to stay behind. The pump seal is designed to sit wet, so a shallow amount held in the well beneath the lower rack is the appliance working as intended, and mopping it out after every run achieves nothing at all. The fault is a level, not a presence.
Judge it like this. Dip a finger: damp with no surface to break is residue. A surface — something that ripples when the door is knocked, that reaches the underside of the filter, that leaves a tide line on the stainless — means it did not empty. Between those two states, watch three or four cycles before drawing a conclusion.
Two more things are worth establishing while the door is open. Whether one programme misbehaves while another does not, since a short cycle allows the drain step less room and fails first. And whether anything changed immediately beforehand: a disposer swapped, pipework altered under the sink, the machine pulled out for a leak, the building doing work on a stack.

Grease presents as a soft brown-grey coating that comes away on your fingers and returns three weeks later, and it is telling you about temperature and loading habits. A gritty white scale is a much longer-running story and needs a different approach again.
Beneath the mesh is the sump, and this is where hard objects settle. A sliver of broken glass, an olive pit, a fragment of shell or bone: any of them can jam the impeller or wedge in the discharge throat. Kill the power at the breaker before reaching in, and lift whatever you find straight out — never push it further down to get it out of sight.
Cleaning is warm water, a soft brush and patience with the pleats; abrasives damage the mesh, and a damaged mesh feeds debris to the pump. Reassemble until the cylinder positively locks, because a filter sitting proud is worse than no filter. Where the water is supposed to go next
Past the pump, drainage relies on shape. The hose has to climb above the water level inside the tub before it drops to the waste connection, so that a draining sink or a loaded stack cannot push water back into the appliance. That climb is either a high loop fastened up under the worktop or an air gap mounted through the sink deck.
Plenty of installations use one and plenty use the other, and which is required is a plumbing-code question rather than a preference. What matters to you is that the arrangement is intact. An air gap spitting water across the counter mid-cycle is not broken in itself; it is reporting a restriction downstream of it, and its cover pulls off for a look.
The waste disposer produces the sharpest version of this fault. New units come with the dishwasher inlet sealed by a knockout plug, and if that plug was never removed the machine will not discharge at all. When drainage stopped dead on the same day a disposer was installed, that is the first thing to have checked and the quickest of all of these to put right.
Kinks come next. Not every full tub is a blocked one. If it stopped early, or sat with the lights on well past its time, it was waiting for something that never happened.
Sound separates the two better than anything else available in a kitchen. A drain pump that energises and cannot shift water holds a constant thin pitch. One that is not being commanded at all makes no noise during the drain step, and that silence is the finding. Listen at the beginning of the step rather than halfway through it.
A code on the display describes what the control saw, not the part that broke. Note it exactly, including any leading letter, before you power-cycle the machine, because clearing it discards the one piece of evidence you did not have to work for. Running a drain-only or cancel cycle afterwards is a legitimate test of whether the path can pass water on a good day. It is not a repair, and treating it as one is how a marginal pump becomes a failed pump.
The point at which a visit is the cheaper option
Call rather than continue at three symptoms: a burning smell from behind the door panel, a breaker that trips when the machine starts, or water reaching the floor. Water and electricity in one cabinet is where this stops being an inconvenience, and the sensible order is to switch the circuit off first and use the phone second.
There is a plain economic point as well. A drain pump asked to work against a blockage every day, or a machine left running for months with water standing in it, does not hold its condition while the problem is thought about. What began as a filter and a hose turns into a pump, seals and a soaked cabinet base, and the second of those costs considerably more than the first.

Follow-up questions
Can I pour vinegar or a drain cleaner in to clear it?
No to drain cleaner. Caustic products are formulated for a bare waste pipe, not for a sealed appliance full of seals, plastics and a metal pump, and they sit inside a machine that cannot flush them away. Vinegar is milder but it will not shift a matted filter or a kinked hose, which is what is usually holding the water in. Take the filter out and look instead.
How often is the filter supposed to be cleaned?
There is an interval in the manual for your series and that is the number to work to, but honestly it depends on what you put in. Rinse plates and it will stay clean-looking for months; load them straight from the table with sauce and labels attached and it can mat within a fortnight. Lift it out once a month, look at it, and let what you see set your own schedule.
The machine drains if I run the cycle again — is it fixed?
It is not. Draining on the second attempt tells you the obstruction is partial or the pump is weak, and both of those deteriorate.
